Last week, there were two guys from British Telecom Research came to our office to give a talk on “IEEE 802.21 Handover for Seamless Network”. This is not a new topic since we all know that a lot of peoples are waiting the convergence of CDMA, 802.11, WiFI, WiMAX and etc. to be happened. But it’s good that BT peoples point out the necessary of Telcos to start working on data services, instead of voice services. I always believe that Telekom Malaysia has owned almost all the necessary infrastructure and should be more aggressive not only in the business but also funding the research and development for the ongoing evolution.
There is an article by Steven Cherry entitled “A Malaysian Internet service provider sidesteps its biggest competitor”. It is published in IEEE Spectrum, a very well known magazine for those who work in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The author has praised the Jaring’s initiative to deploy the wireless broadband service. Yes, I have to agree that Jaring has indeed done a good job at least they know how to self-promote. But I think that it’s much better we ourselves owned part of the technology, if not all. Soma Networks Inc. is the one providing the base station. Just wonder when we can become a technology leader!
Some very astonishing words from the author:
Malaysia has long been a telecommunications leader in Southeast Asia. It was the first country in the region to hook into the Internet. Its enlightened spectrum management policies encourage innovation. A so-called multimedia supercorridor—a miniature Silicon Valley constructed during the global dot-com bubble of the 1990s—still flourishes. So it's not surprising that a wireless broadband service like Jaring's is found here and only a few other places around the world. This type of broadband is not available in Taipei, home of the skyscraper that supplanted Petronas as the world's tallest, nor in Chicago, where the Sears Tower once held that record, nor in any other large city in the United States, which once led the world in Internet access but is now lagging.
We Malaysians should be proud of this. ^____^

Yeah... I read the same article a while back. My attitude is to believe it when I see it happen. :)
By hook or by crook, it has to coz it's the only entity making profit in Mimos.
Whose baby is Mimos anyway? Will the protect them against TM?
Major share holder of Mimos is MOSTE. Whenever our ex-PM is still there, they won't close Mimos. BTW, I don't think that Jaring will be a threat to TM-Net. Our government forces both of them to merge! But I am not too sure about the current development. Since TM owns all the core infrastructure, it is in a favour position compared to other ISPs.
They won't close it, otherwise what will happen to all the employees? The government is a welfare centre for unproductive workers. :)
ha... this is an amazed statement by a foreigner....
